Árpád Tőzsér was born in 1935 in Gömörpéterfala or Petrovce by its Slovak name. He caught the attention of the literary world in 1958, when some of his poems were included in an anthology of works by Hungarian writers in Slovakia. He quickly emerged as one of the most gifted poets of his generation, and he was also active as an editor, scholar, and teacher. He wrote a play entitled Faustus in Prague (2005), and he has also published collections of his translations of poetry from Slovak.
